Types of senior care in Fairfield County

Six care types, and the Connecticut license behind each one.

Home›Care types

What types of senior care are available in Fairfield County?

Fairfield County families choose among assisted living (an apartment in a managed residential community plus care from a licensed ALSA), memory care (a dementia special care unit run by an ALSA), residential care homes, nursing homes, care at home from home health or homemaker-companion agencies, adult day centers and hospice.

Independent living with no ALSA services needs no care license at all. Each guide below explains what the license allows, what it costs at Connecticut's 2025 medians, and how many licenses the state lists in the county.

How do I choose the right care type?

Work from needs, not labels: daily help with stable health points to assisted living, exit-seeking dementia to a dementia special care unit, continuous nursing to a nursing home, and a parent who mainly needs supervision, meals and medication help may fit a residential care home.

Our comparisons put two options side by side, and the situation guides start from what just happened.

Which care types do Medicare or Connecticut programs pay for?

Medicare pays for short skilled nursing stays after a qualifying hospital admission, intermittent home health and hospice; HUSKY C pays for long-term nursing home care; and the Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders pays for home care and for assisted living services in approved communities, but not rent.

VA pension with Aid and Attendance can help veterans and surviving spouses with any of these costs.
