Which Fairfield County towns have the oldest populations?

By share of residents 65 and older in the 2020-2024 American Community Survey, the oldest towns are Sherman (32.9%), Redding (26.4%) and Shelton (21.4%), while Bridgeport and Darien have the lowest shares.

The oldest towns are mostly small and rural, with little or no licensed care inside town lines, so families there usually compare options in Danbury, Ridgefield, Newtown or Shelton. Bridgeport and Stamford have the largest older populations in absolute numbers.

Why is Fairfield County split across planning regions?

Connecticut abolished county government in 1960, and in 2022 the Census Bureau replaced the state's eight counties with nine planning regions, so Fairfield County's towns now report as the Western Connecticut and Greater Bridgeport regions, with Shelton in the Naugatuck Valley region.

The county name still matters for families because hospitals, agencies and people use it; for state programs the town is what counts. Two Area Agencies on Aging serve the county: Southwestern Connecticut Agency on Aging for the shoreline and lower county, and Western Connecticut Area Agency on Aging for the Danbury area and Shelton.

Where is most of the county's licensed senior care?

Along the I-95 and Merritt Parkway corridor: Stamford, Norwalk, Fairfield and Bridgeport hold most of the county's nursing homes, while assisted living licenses cluster in Stamford, Danbury, Shelton and Norwalk.

Each town page lists every licensed provider with a local address, the closest alternatives when there are none, and straight-line distances to the nearest hospitals.
